"The Maui Film Festival's Starlight Cinema at Wailea & Stardust Cinema,
the new nomadic incarnation of the Starlight Cinema, both of which use the identical Dolby Sound Surround Systems
as the Maui Film Festival's "crown jewel" Celestial Cinema venue, continue to raise the bar
and are now also among the preeminent under-the-stars venues on the planet.
Every other festival in the world now has to play catch up".
Russell Allen, Technical Director, Dolby Laboratories
(Dolby is the world leader in cinema sound technology.)
The Stardust Cinema is the nomadic identical twin sister of the Starlight Cinema. Frequently Asked Questions Answered
1. What kinds of films are available to screen for our group?
We have screened everything from 50 FIRST DATES, which had just been released, for Blockbuster Video, whose industry contact made an otherwise unlikely possibility possible, to the nostalgic BLUE HAWAII, in its full Cinema scope glory, which was shot in Hawaii in the early 1960's, starring Elvis Presley and was the choice of the virus protection mavens at Symantec. Surfing films including THE ENDLESS SUMMER and STEP INTO LIQUID have also screened and proven extremely popular with audiences. The bottom line in each case has proven to be a collaboration between the client, their meeting planner and/or their DMC, and Festival Director Barry Rivers with his knowledge of the industry and access to material.
PLEASE NOTE: The Maui Film Festival will not screen any film at any of its venues, without an appropriate license from the rights' holder.
2. In general, what does each Maui Film Festival "Experience" include?
Equipment and personnel, including a Director of Operations, Technical Director, Projectionist, Sound Engineer, Chief Screen Rigger and necessary production assistants, inclusive of travel expenses, to set-up and operate the agreed to presentation of the selected film (video) at the agreed to venue. Quotes will also include whatever power is necessary if the location is in Wailea (some venues - including the Celestial Cinema - require 3-phase 200 amp 220 volt power). If not in Wailea, as would be the case with all Stardust Cinema and certain (non-Wailea based) SandDance Theater events, additional charges for power generation may be incurred and are passed through to the client. Depending on the venue selected (notably the Celestial Cinema and the Starlight Cinema), quotes may include the Maui Film Festival's state-of-the-art, Dolby Digital Surround Sound equipped, air-conditioned, portable projection booth/trailer. A complimentary 24-hour Grace Period (beginning at the start time of the originally planned time of the screening) for a "fall-back" screening to be held. Additional days, beyond the grace period, will be charged at a rate of 20% of the original quote.
3. In general, what does the cost of each Maui Film Festival "Experience" exclude?
Site fees for either the pre-event set-up day, day of the event itself and post-event strike day. These fees are negotiated between the client and/or their meeting planner or DMC directly with either the Sea Watch Restaurant (for the Celestial Cinema, Starlight Cinema and Sea Watch Restaurant based Moonlight Movies), the Wailea Beach Marriott Resort Hotel and Spa (for Maui SkyDome events) or the State of Hawaii's Department of Land and Natural Resources (for the SandDance Theater). (The Maui Film Festival has on-going relationships with all of these parties, as well as the other Island-wide private function spaces noted elsewhere in these materials, and is available to be of assistance if needed). Insurance for inclement weather or other "Acts of God" beyond the control of the Maui Film Festival, Inc., that may cause/force cancellation or delay of the event is not included. Security to insure the safety of the Maui Film Festival's equipment is also excluded from all quotes unless otherwise agreed to.
4. What's the weather like in Wailea and other parts of the island?
Thankfully, the Wailea Resort on Maui is known worldwide for its near perfect year-round weather. There are times of the year, primarily December through March, when weather can potentially be problematic, and the occasional "Kona" storm can take place at any time of the year. For those reasons, the Maui Film Festival suggests one of two things to address any concern. These include either working with your host property to provide ballroom space in the event weather becomes problematic OR scheduling a "Free Night" on the night following the night originally planned for your open-air cinema event. That way, if the weather is problematic on the original night planned, there is a fall-back position of the following evening.
PLEASE NOTE: Due to their size and/or planned screening format, certain venues, especially those not located in the Wailea area, may present unique challenges vis a vis inclement weather. For those companies that the chronological safety net noted above is problematic, the Maui Film Festival suggests weather insurance or the Maui Arts & Cultural Center as a fall-back position for events with less than 1,200 attendees. Please contact Barry Rivers for details.
5. Who can we contact regarding rain/weather insurance?
For a quote on rain insurance, please google "Rain Insurance" and/or visit the website of the Global Weather Insurance Agency, Inc.
at www.globalweatherinsurance.com. You may also contact Patricia Sleicher, President by phone at 516.466.3138 or by email at psleicher@globalweatherinsurance.com. Global Weather is the largest insurance brokerage/agency specializing in the design, marketing, underwriting,
