Documentarian William Gazecki’s Oscar-nominated Waco: The Rules of Engagement analyzed an event fueled by ignorance and religious fanaticism. His current film, Future by Design, winner of Best Documentary at the Australian International Film Festival, leaves those shadows behind for a vision of an enlightened future.
Jacque Fresco is “a modern Da Vinci”: a self-taught scientist, artist, inventor, industrial designer and social engineer who has imagined (and at his Venus Project in Florida, partially prototyped) the blueprint of a whole new world. In scientifically and environmentally engineered cities, architecture similar to the amazing new buildings of Dubai, “transveyor” transport, and computer-based management will fuse into a “resource-based economy.” A hologram of the world will monitor its carrying capacity and shape how we utilize the planet. War and prisons will no longer be necessary as the scientific method guides us all.
If all this sounds like mid-‘60s World’s Fair utopianism meets Star Trek, Fresco admits much of it is conceptual at this point. But some of it seems astonishingly doable, some he's actually done, and Fresco’s drawings and amazing video animations of his models pull you right into his vision. Fresco is a fascinating lecturer, and to say he has a batch of good ideas is like saying the Taj Mahal has nice minarets. Whether you shake your head in wonder or dismay, Future by Design will get inside it.
