People are making cars these days that run on tired fast-food fry oil. This movie focuses on cars that are powered by the relatively untapped power of eccentric human individualism. This film is about art cars.
For example, the filmmaker himself, Harrod Blank, documents his one-of-a-kind Cameravan, a vehicle totally skinned in actual cameras. His little twist is that some of these cameras actually take pictures of all the people who are staring at his van. It's a who's-watching-whom deal. It's art. But it can still pass a safety check. I don't believe that last statement is true, however, for Captain Telephone, whose car looks like a gigantic red push-button telephone. He leaps out of the car wearing his superhero-like costume. He says," I'm the guy with the big red phone car. It's actually pretty good to be known like that."
His attitude is a lot like that of Elmer Fleming of South Carolina, who drives around a spoon-covered Chevy pickup." I been the Spoon Man for years," he says. "I enjoy the attention I get. It's hard to describe the feeling you get being the character I am." Uri Geller, the mentalist spoon-bender, has a black Lincoln Continental covered with culturally significant kitchenware related to James Dean, Lennon, Elvis, and Dali. He is juxtaposed here against Harry Sperl, creator of the Hamburger Harley, a man obsessed with hamburgers as the American icon. Inverting the usual order of things, he says, The hamburger ate all the money I had left. So why does he do this‾ That's what I like. To confuse people. To do unusual things.
