Forty years later, it's about time to reassess the legacy of the so-called "flower children" or whatever label people once used to caricature a revolution. Does anyone still believe that the world is not coming to an end but that is coming to a start‾ Yes of course, and this doc sets out to find them.
Early in the film we hear a sarcastic radio jock say, "Is there a counter-culture left‾ Or is it just a few people stuck in a time-warp‾" Obviously this dude just doesn't understand how a time-warp actually works. The time-warp keeps pulsing. Every few decades you get a new beat, like a heart. Once you get on the time-warp, you're on there with Chief Joseph, and Gandhi, and Janis, and your great-grandparents, then you just ride the beat.
The next pulse is beginning. That radio jock has no idea.
This film is solid documentary, in no way psychedelic. We meet people who are fun to be with, who are living with the Earth in love, who continue to "garden the minds of men." They're the hippie Amish, so to speak, sincere and hard-working people of faith—faith in the Earth. They continue to understand that pursuing money as a thing in itself is the height of lunacy, for money is an illusion. Only one species on this spangled planet is dumb enough to pay rent.
When the hard rain starts to fall, it's good to have a few hippies around to lend a hand.
