The 1 Giant Leap idea is angelically effective at rewiring the neurons of consciousness for the better, and it is loads of fun. Creators Bridgeman and Catto laid down some basic musical tracks, then traveled the world with highly portable recording equipment, collecting the audio elaborations of just about every type imaginable. Edited, the result is a dazzling multicultural magic-carpet-ride of musical joy that swirls continuously from African tribal groups to Tuvan throat singers to Romany gypsies to urban hiphoppers and so on. The implication-that all people are beautiful and are equal-need hardly be stated. Nevertheless, this film integrates interview footage with some fascinating sages who speak bluntly about the root cause of human suffering, that cause being the rampant selfishness of the undisciplined ego. Early in the film Bhagavan Das fumes: You need to tame your wild, selfish mind! 'What about me‾ What about me‾' It's a bore! It's a drag! So you can just shut up. And give. Give. This is blunt, perhaps even rude. But in the rousing context of the global audio and video images, the honesty makes you want to jump up and cheer. Further treat: Ledward Ka'apana opens the film playing guitar while standing in a carport; Willie K gets a real fun moment.
