All I ever knew about Wavy Gravy was the Ben & Jerry's ice cream flavor. Now, having seen this biographical doc and smiled joyfully all the way through, I love this man.
He started out as beat poet Hugh Romney, at whose pad Dylan wrote Hard Rain's Gonna Fall, then evolved into a hip comedian who opened for Coletrane and Monk, then went West to join the Merrie Pranksters. At Woodstock, he and his fellow Hog Farm commune members operated the free kitchens that averted sure disaster. But Woodstock was just the start of a life of compassionate activism. The clown persona evolved as a way to save his own life because the police don't want to club a clown, or Santa, or the Easter Bunny.
Every great man should only be so lucky as to have a wife like his, supporting his divine hijinks every step of the way. "Wavy is genuinely the most heroic person I have ever met," she says. "He's my teacher. I'm his protector."
Don't imagine that this film is just a flashback for old hippies. Wavy Gravy is more relevant than ever, a courageous survivor who has given his life to the cause of joy and laughter, sanity and love. He is truly a genius and, yes, a saint.
And he will be on Maui joining us for the festival. Don't worry; you won't have trouble spotting him in the crowd.
