Is natural drinking water a commodity to be sold on the market, or is it an innate human right‾
Certain international corporations (Coca-Cola, Bechtel, Nestle, Perrier…), aided by governments, are seizing control of the Earth's dwindling fresh water sources in order to make a profit from people's desperation. By depriving villagers of access to natural water sources, thereby forcing them to buy DaSani in plastic bottles, "we are redefining how consumers get hydrated," says a Coca-Cola annual report.
This film makes the case that such a mentality is insane. What it reveals is infuriating—for example, the Bolivian army firing on its own citizens for gathering rainwater (which belongs to Bechtel). Clouds are being stolen in China. The Nestle corporation throws a SLAPP lawsuit against organizations hoping to prevent it from buying the Great Lakes. The Bush family is buying river land in Paraguay.
Gratefully, this film presents some solutions to the crisis. For example, the Bolivian people succeeded in forcing Bechtel out. But the most effective answers require united citizen uprising within discrete watershed regions. Do you know your watershed‾
Created by the producer of The Corporation, a hugely successful 2004 examination of the madness of corporate mentality, Blue Gold has screened at over two dozen festivals throughout the world and won several "Best" awards.
