The line-up of medical specialists in the cast of this doc should tip you off to the seriousness of its intent. But this movie can't hurt you. It wants you to stop hurting yourself in that slow, sweet, greasy manner so prevalent across the U.S.-through the unconscious consumption of processed foods. Americans haven't been challenged to think about what they eat. The discussion in this movie digs into the reasons why this is so. Much of the problem lies with the economy and its crazy way of rewarding unhealthy behavior-subsidizing the crops that become processed foods, for example. (How about subsidies for fruits and vegetables‾ the film asks.) What's more, we have a medical profession that's constantly treating disease (and profiting from disease) rather than promoting health. The film also examines the carnage that the Western diet inflicts on the Earth and its living creatures. One commentator says this: Some say the Earth is dying. That's not true. But many of us are trying to kill it. Tough words. The effect of this film is like a bop on the side of the head-you knew all this, sort of, but here it is, all in a package and plop on your lap. However, not to despair. The solution to the whole mess is obvious and simple and good. Eat only plants. (No, a donut is not a plant.)
