No, this is not Wolverine. These talons are curved and musical—Michael Masley's self-invented "bowhammers," one for each of his ten fingers, with which he strikes and strokes the strings of his cymbalom, which is a large chromatic concert dulcimer.

Masley has recorded and contributed to many albums of his music but he is not so much a concert presence as he is a guerilla poet who has played on the streets of Berkeley CA for the past 25 years. His performances cause people to stop in their tracks. Steven Tyler of Aerosmith recalls hearing Masley's music for the first time and thinking, "What is this, an angel that fell from heaven‾"

Tyler appears in this doc about Masley's art and work. So does the singer from Def Leppard. So does the composer who won a Grammy for Flashdance. So does the man who produced John Lennon's later albums not to mention a lot of other great music. They all want us to pay attention to this artist.

Masley is also a "sidewalk blogger." Acting on behalf of all Americans as their "Artist General," he posts messages that parody the cigarette-pack warnings from the Surgeon General. Examples: "When Dissent Blinks, Democracy Stumbles." Also "Sow the Spin, Reap the Whirlwind."

Perhaps Michael Masley will bring some of his warnings to Maui—presuming he can get them through the airport security inspection. But TSA better not take those bowhammers.

Masley's coming to play at the Maui FF screening.
