With the Nobelity Project, Turk Pipkin acted on a simple, good idea. Instead of just patting Nobel Prize winners on the back, let's talk with them and find out what they have to teach us about life, the planet, and our responsibilities as intelligent life-forms.
In this inspiring doc, Pipkin literally travels the Earth to look at the worst problems he can find, and he asks the same question every time: What can be done to fix it‾ For example, we look at cluster bombs—a purely evil invention if there ever was one. (The U.S. has been the most prolific user, producer, and exporter of cluster bombs.) Then we meet Jody Williams, a woman who is leading an effective effort to ban their use. The solutions really are right before us.
We visit the Miracle Foundation Orphanage, which is "saving people one kid at a time," and we see how easy and gratifying it is for any of us to get involved. We see that a simple well dug by Ethiopian villagers radically changes the fortunes of the women and girls of the village. Simple, effective solutions. "There's nothing magical about change. It's about getting up off your ass."
By the way, Willie Nelson makes a delightful appearance, riding up on a horse, playing a sizzling chess game, and telling one of the best jokes I've heard in a long time. Our Maui screening is this film's world premiere.
