Anyone who has ever prayed for a good idea-or who has suffered with the results of having not-such-good ideas, or who has had to persevere even when a situation has turned to apparent disaster-will recognize the humanity of this buddy flick starring Dallas Roberts (I Walk The Line, 3:10 To Yuma) and Jeremy Renner (The Assassination of Jesse James, The Hurt Locker).
Matt and Sam are partners, pals, and inventors of failed gadgets-a television for joggers, for example. But they keep insisting that every bad idea gets us closer to a really good idea. Their duds accrue to such a point that they resort to desperate gambling risks. Those bad choices wipe out their business and, not so incidentally, Matt's marriage to his long-suffering and loyal wife Gina, played by Israeli actress Ayelet Zurer (Angels and Demons).
End of story? Not so fast. As Matt says, I keep thinking about something Thomas Edison said: 'A lot of people don't know how close they are to success when they give up.' In short, this serio-comic tale focuses on pluck and perseverance. But whether or not these guys are plain old fools remains in doubt throughout the story. Roberts and Renner are completely natural in their portrayal of male friendship. Zurer delights in her portrayal of a woman who really does love her man whether he deserves it or not. The Hawai'i premiere.
