HAWAII A VOICE FOR SOVEREIGNTY is a documentary about the native Hawaiian's journey to sustain their culture, spirituality, and connection to the land, since the takeover in 1893. Our screening is it's World Premiere. This modern epic documentary, filmed over four years, contains rare interviews with Native Hawaiians in their homes, at sacred sites, in mountains and the rain forests throughout the islands. Along with the voices of the "people of the land", Professor Haunani-Kay Trask, Clifford Nae'ole, Senator Kalani English, Kaleikoa Ka'eo, Jimmy Medeiros, Bumpy Kanahele, Ke'eaumoku Kapu, Ramsay Taum, Hanalei Colleado, Grammy nominee Willie K, and other Hawaiian leaders, take us into rarely seen ancient lifestyles where spirituality, culture, and care for the land form a sacred bond between humankind and the natural world. They reveal their quest to secure their Hawaiian rights as the host culture, and their economic, social, and ecological future by bridging their ancient knowledge with modern knowledge, technology including renewable energy, agricultural land systems and more as they move towards their goal of sustainability.
Gregg Braden, author of NY Times Best Seller "Fractal Time reveals in the film,
"Indigenous people gave us a path of how to take care of the earth, each other, and all living things through heart based living. The key to our future lies in the wisdom of our past".
Hawaii A Voice for Sovereignty has garnered global media coverage during the making of the film in the USA, China, Africa, and Germany. Many nations are taking an interest in the plight of the Hawaiians. The experience of the indigenous Hawaiian people is universal. "Hawaii has a message to the world", Clifford Nae'ole says in the film about his 'ohana. They demonstrate that we are all connected and depend on the land and natural resources of the planet for survival.
Catherine Bauknight, a professional photographer for over two decades, has been featured in such publications as The New York Times, the cover of Time Magazine, The Los Angeles Times, Newsweek Magazine, USA Today, Rolling Stone, and People Magazine. She was one of five international photographers who risked their lives to cover the Tiananmen Square massacre. According to Bauknight, “My goal is to enhance the awareness of indigenous people by enabling them a voice, to tell their own story which contributes greater knowledge to the family of mankind”. During trips to Hawaii throughout the years Bauknight was compelled to uncover the reason for the lack of presence of the host culture." It was an honor to reveal their story through the voice of the people”, Bauknight says. To learn more about Hawaii A Voice for Sovereignty visit www.catherinebauknight.com
