Juana (Diana Elizabeth Torres) is no stranger to adversity in life, nor in the kitchen. Struggling to support her elderly father and young daughter, this working-class Latina rises at dawn to prep her fruit-vending cart. When the mean streets shut down even that meager enterprise, she’s forced to find a more stable job in downtown Oakland—as a kitchen assistant at a sushi restaurant.  Though her chopping skills and work ethic are more than adequate, she finds herself immersed in an entirely new world of cuisine and culture.
During her shifts she secretly observes the sushi chefs as they chop, slice, and roll their creations. Her growing interest does not go unnoticed by master sushi chef Aki (Yutaka Takeuchi), who eventually agrees to teach her the basics. Juana’s passion for this culinary art resonates with her hunger for a better life, but her quest to become a sushi line chef is met with opposition for two reasons: she is neither male nor Japanese. With the odds stacked against her, can Juana defeat these cultural and gender stereotypes and cross barriers to identity and acceptance?
