(2014, 90 mins)

What happens behind the scenes at a male strip club? Take a candid look at life as a male exotic dancer both on and offstage at La Bare Dallas, one of the world’s most popular dance clubs. This wild and engaging documentary marks the directorial debut of Joe Manganiello. He played “Big Dick Richie” in Steven Soderbergh’s Magic Mike, a fiction modeled on the men of La Bare Dallas. After the success of Magic Mike, Manganiello teamed up with younger brother Nicholas (who runs his big brother’s production company) to shoot some footage at the famed venue for a would-be reality television show. Instead though they opted to make this documentary film. Manganiello reveals the naked truth about the industry through thought-provoking interviews and first-person testimonials.

The film gives visual evidence that male entertainers are held to a higher performance standard than their female counterparts.   They work their butts off executing elaborately choreographed group and solo routines that incorporate acrobatics and role-playing intended to titillate their audiences. And yet La Bare serves up more than just beef jerky. The film gives a rare insider’s look at the rowdy—and at times, tragic—history of the iconic Dallas club. A performer was shot and killed just a few weeks before filming began, and that tragic event hovers darkly over the film. Take a look at the strip club world.
