Age 78 is not the end but the beginning of life's madly meaningful adventure for Avraham (Makram J. Khouri). He's an Israeli magician determined to journey back to his native Greece in order to find and thank the man who once saved him from the Holocaust. To his regret, he's forced to bring along a guardian—his son Yehuda (Zohar Strauss), a super-devout Hassidic musician. The son's piety disgusts the jaded old man, and father-son turbulence forms the heart of this funny and emotionally rousing drama.
A Greek prostitute, played by Ariane Labed (Alps, Attenberg), provides an emotional palette that contrasts beautifully with the slap-and-clasp rowdiness of the men. The great strength of this heartfelt story is in its strong and complex characters. Add to that the sumptuous visuals of cinematographer Benji Cohen, whose location footage will put Greece at the top of your travel wish-list.
Two young writer/directors from Tel Aviv, Israel—Guy Nattiv and Erez Tadmor—created this film, capping their previous success with the multi-awarded Strangers. Nattiv also made The Flood (Mabul), and Tadmor won a slew of festival recognitions for his 2009 comedy A Matter of Size.
Magic Men will cling to your heart with elevating joy. You don't have to be Jewish, but it helps.
