YEAR OF THE DOG

Wednesday, August 8, at 5 and 7:30 p.m.
TEN CANOES
Anthropology and entertainment are marvelously married in this first feature in an Australian Aboriginal language, shot in breathtaking widescreen cinematography, which feels authentic to the core as it offers a take on tribal life that's set in a mythic, prehistoric past and is warm, funny and powerfully alive. Its mixture of wisdom and whimsy makes this movie feel as timeless as it is timely. It leaves us "genuinely intrigued, touched and amused" wrote the Washington Post. Unrated. 90 min. In Aboriginal with English subtitles and English.

FRIDAY, August 17, at 5 and 7:30 p.m.
PAPRIKA
As Valentines to the power of cinema, big dreams and the inner child go, it doesn't get much more exhilarating than this mind-boggling anime, from Japanese master animator Satoshi Kon about a "dream detective" who can enter into people's dreams and synchronize with their unconscious. It's an eye-opening, mind-blowing, adult animated adventure that's "evidence that Japanese animators are reaching for the moon, while most of their American counterparts remain stuck in the kiddie sandbox" raved the NY Times. In Japanese with English subtitles. Rated R. 90 min.

ANGEL-A
Director Luc Besson ("The Deep Blue", "The Fifth Element", "La Femme Nikita") is one of the most interesting international cinematic visionaries at work today. His newest and most transplendently magical romance is elevated to the stuff of cinematic majesty by cinematographer Thierry Arbogast, whose glorious monochrome photography of a nearly endless parade of Parisian vistas serve as the backdrop for a love story between a seductive 'angel' and a small time crook. In French and Spanish with English subtitles. Rated R. 88 min.
